With no offense to Dr. House, for whom I have the utmost respect, the book is disjointed, choppy, and poorly written. But, I want to emphasize that it is well worth reading.

House himself recognizes in the first chapter that writing is not his strength. Luckily, this is not a novel, nor is it intended to captivate the disinterested. Anyone who wishes to learn more about the field will derive pleasure and value from this quick and informative read. One person found this helpful. Perhaps once in a hundred years there strides on the human stage an individual who does more to bring change and alter the way we think of disease so that it revolutionized the way we take of patients. William House was destined to be one such genius.

This was a hundred fold decrease. His popularizing the surgical microscope and introduction of techniques meticulously thought out and executed on cadavers have made the exceptional, routine in the operating room. Among others he made and used the cochlear implant and using this device was able to restore sound to the profoundly deaf. The book also demonstrates the personal side of a very private, quiet and humble man. His sensitivity shines through in his writings.

A tribute by his daughter and the famous audiologist Dr. Karen Berliner who was involved in the early programming of cochlear implants in adults and children gives the reader a ring side seat which gives one the feel for how this technology was developed and how a leap was made from the laboratory to the human. Tributes and stories written by scores of ear surgeons that he trained lend a a human dimension which reflects a truly remarkable teacher, doctor and human being.

A final chapter describes the authors thoughts on how he thinks cochlear implant work. The book is a great story of a remarkable human being who fought against all odds and won.

He humbly acknowledges the people who stood by him in his meteoric rise. Called the father of skull-base story his is the story that might make a great movie his own failings and his formative career and where it went. For all his achievements it is surprising that he has not received the Nobel Prize, I recommend this book very highly.

Every medical student should be asked to read it. I am not of the medical profession but found this to be a well written, informative book - and difficult to put down once I picked it up. I believe anyone with an interest in innovation would deeply appreciate Dr.
